day of death
11 May 1902
The year was 1871, Richard Maddox invented the gelatin dry plate. In his day you had to take a photo and develop it right then and there. There was also a harmful chemical, called ether, being use at the time, which was affecting his health. Once he realized that it was this ether vapor was toxic to humans. He had the idea of having the "sensitizing chemicals coated on a glass plate in a Gelatin emulsion, instead of wet collodion" (DarkestRoom) and shared it to a British Journal in September of 1871 . Although he did not understand that he had made a mile stone for photography, Charles Bennett and others would expand his idea and put dry plates available to every one on the open market. By the 1880's the wet plate was a thing of the past. and the dry plate would be changed into bigger and better things.
Now, in 1901 "Maddox received the Royal Photographic Society’s Progress Medal for inventions that led to the foundation of the dry plate and film industry. " (DarkestRoom)
